Shaping India’s CFD Ecosystem Through Collaboration & Innovation

Annual CFD Symposium

The division's most prominent and enduring initiative is the Annual CFD Symposium, which has been consistently organized since the division's foundation. This symposium has become an eagerly anticipated event in India's aerospace calendar, drawing participation from leading CFD researchers, practitioners, and students from across the country and internationally.

The symposium serves as a vital platform for sharing accumulated knowledge from major aerospace design houses, academic institutions, and industry partners. Over the years, this event has evolved into a comprehensive forum that includes:

  • Technical paper presentations on diverse CFD topics

  • Expert keynote lectures from renowned researchers

  • Panel discussions on emerging trends and challenges

  • Special sessions focusing on student research

  • Networking opportunities for professionals

  •

The symposium location typically alternates between Bangalore and other aeronautical centers in India. For instance, the 23rd Annual CFD Symposium was held at Hotel Royal Orchid in Bangalore in August 2022, while the 2024 symposium (marking the 26th anniversary) was conducted at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi, from August 11–13, 2024, with Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman of ISRO, as the Chief Guest.

Support for Young Researchers

A distinctive feature of the CFD Division's activities is its dedicated support for emerging talent in computational fluid dynamics. The division provides:

  • Fellowship opportunities for students presenting papers at the annual symposium, covering registration, travel, and local expenses

  • Awards for best student papers presented at symposia

  • Platforms for students to interact with established professionals in the field

Technical Focus Areas

The CFD Division encompasses various computational fluid dynamics applications relevant to aerospace engineering. While specific areas may evolve with technological advances, the primary focus domains include:

  • Aerodynamic design and analysis of aircraft, spacecraft, and missiles

  • Propulsion system modeling and optimization

  • Aeroelasticity and fluid-structure interaction

  • Hypersonic and high-temperature gas dynamics

  • Turbulence modeling and simulation

  • Multiphase and reacting flows

  • Novel numerical methods and algorithms

  • High-performance computing applications in aerospace
